Right-click photo to view a larger image.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I continually shop for new wines like an average consumer.<\/p>\n<p>I do this to get put of the &#8220;wine bubble&#8221; that keeps reality at an arm&#8217;s length for so many wine geeks, fans, enthusiasts, spectators, aficionados, and members of the trade.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/wineindustryinsight.com\/?p=64431\">How by-the-glass doesn&#8217;t work and can trash a winery&#8217;s reputation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/wineindustryinsight.com\/?p=64312\">When Rogue Wine Calibration Bites You In The \u2026 Palate<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/recommendationinsights.com\/?p=31\">Vino Casino Recommendations<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I keep doing this hoping to find an easy, low-friction and &#8212; most importantly &#8212; accurate way to find wine I will like.<\/p>\n<p>But after 40+ years of drinking wine, studying it, writing about it, judging major competitions and even owning an importer\/wholesaler\/distributor in Los Angeles, that goal remains elusive.<\/p>\n<p>Wine is not alone in this.<\/p>\n<p>Books, music, movies and other &#8220;products of taste&#8221; suffer from the same inherent issues. I&#8217;ve written extensively about this over at <a href=\"http:\/\/recommendationinsights.com\/\">Recommendation Insights<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Club W got me into the right ballpark (sort of)<\/h3>\n<p>The taste questionnaire used by Club W, however, seemed like it might have made some progress.<\/p>\n<p>Club W begins with a series of questions linked to how how you like your coffee, fruit juice and other taste preferences. I like Zinfandel, but that &#8212; and the other two preedictable wines &#8212; are far from being &#8220;adventurous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-64354\" src=\"http:\/\/wineindustryinsight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-09-at-12.21.03-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-08-09 at 12.21.03 PM\" width=\"905\" height=\"474\" \/><br \/>\nBut these &#8220;also rans&#8221; below, had were in my ballpark<\/h2>\n<p>Garnacha (Grenache), Carignane and Monastrell (Mourvedre) are among my favorite varietals. So, I signed up for the club and ordered those three &#8212; at $13 \/bottle &#8212; all squarely in my ballpark.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-64353\" src=\"http:\/\/wineindustryinsight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-09-at-12.21.47-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-08-09 at 12.21.47 PM\" width=\"1202\" height=\"743\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Quelle bummer!!!!<\/h2>\n<p>In much the same awkward way I described in <a href=\"http:\/\/wineindustryinsight.com\/?p=64312\">My $100 Wine Lesson: Sometimes Rogue Wine Calibration Bites You In The \u2026 Palate<\/a> that these are probably very nice wines &#8230; for someone else.<\/p>\n<p>I found these three wines watery, lacking varietal character, and unbalanced by being over acid and tannic. But this is a style that someone else will like.<\/p>\n<h3>Correct varietal (ballpark), wrong style (team)<\/h3>\n<p>So, Club W&#8217;s test identified some of my favorite varietals. But every varietal has many styles and it stumbled over that.<\/p>\n<p>As with my experience in <a href=\"http:\/\/wineindustryinsight.com\/?p=64312\">My $100 Wine Lesson<\/a> I found all three consistent in this paste perception.<\/p>\n<p>Meaning that I got calibrated to the wrong wine buyer again. It&#8217;s important to recognize that this disconnect is most likely to the way my palate works, not that these are horrible wines.<\/p>\n<h2>Kudos Club W! (But&#8230;.)<\/h2>\n<p>Kudos to Club W for putting all of these wines in my ballpark.
